Shaangu's 13 MPa Centrifugal CO2 Compressors Installed at a Coal-Power Capture and Oilfield-Storage Project

Multiple centrifugal CO2 compressors have finished installation at a project that captures flue-gas CO2 from coal units and sends it to oilfield injection.

Shaangu Group (西安陕鼓动力) states that multiple centrifugal CO₂ compressors built for a 2.64 GW "new energy plus supporting coal power plus carbon capture" integrated project in northwest China have completed installation. The machine is a 13 MPa-class single-shaft centrifugal CO₂ compressor, which the company describes as the first Chinese high-pressure centrifugal CO₂ compressor applied to an oilfield carbon-capture duty (1).

The project

The company describes the project as a national-level low-carbon demonstration, integrating new energy, supporting coal power and CCUS. A million-tonne-class CO₂ capture system recovers CO₂ from the flue gas of coal-fired units and supplies it for CO₂ flooding and enhanced oil recovery. Shaangu states it is currently the largest full-chain demonstration project in China running from coal-power flue-gas capture through to oilfield utilisation and storage (1).

The company's stated figures after start-up are a saving of about 43,800 tonnes of standard coal a year and a reduction of 107,600 tonnes of CO₂ emissions a year (1).

Why the duty is hard, in the maker's account

Shaangu states that the oilfield-storage scenario places an unusually high requirement on CO₂ compressor discharge pressure, because CO₂ physical properties change abruptly at high pressure, which the company says can readily cause severe unit vibration, seal failure and a sharp increase in operating loss (1).

The company says the machines use its aerodynamic calculation method to reduce compression power relative to conventional projects while maintaining capture rate and product purity, and that long-cycle running stability is improved in the same move. It describes the result as a match for the requirements of long-distance CO₂ pipeline transport and deep reservoir injection (1).

The machine class

Shaangu's CO₂ centrifugal compressor technology is listed in the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology's recommended catalogue of energy-saving and carbon-reduction technology equipment. As described by the company, the technology uses high-precision CO₂ physical-property calculation software and covers CCUS plants of 150,000 to 3,000,000 tonnes a year, with discharge pressure from 2 to 20 MPa across grades. The design uses a short-and-thick dry gas seal, a shaft configuration the company calls a whip-resistant shaft, and vortex-suppression structures to reduce the effect of aerodynamic forces on the rotor. The company states the machines reach a polytropic efficiency above 80% with intelligent control (1).

Site conditions

The company states that ambient temperatures at the site exceed 40 °C in a normal summer and that peak ground-surface temperature passes 50 °C, and that high wind and drought occur alongside the heat during construction (1).

What the source does not state

The release does not name the project owner or the site, does not give the number of compressors in the order, and does not state discharge flow, motor power, capture rate, CO₂ purity, injection pressure at the wellhead, or the pipeline length to the oilfield. It does not state the commissioning schedule, nor whether the compressors have run on CO₂ yet — the release covers completed installation. The contract value is not published. The release attributes the aerodynamic and efficiency claims to Shaangu's own calculation and testing, and gives no third-party measured performance.
